    Visitor Services Recreation Assistant/Intern at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge - must be 18

    This is a Visitor Services Recreation Assistant/Intern  at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Newburyport , MA.  Located on Plum Island, MA. This coastal refuge is 4600 acres of salt marsh, beach, dunes, and shrubland type forest. It contains a pristine 6 mile beach just an hour from Boston and is a premier birding spot with over 300 species of birds. The candidate will work in the refuge's very busy fee booth collecting fees, selling passes, answering questions, explaining regulations, and acting as the dispatch for the Refuge's law enforcement. Incumbent will learn valuable public lands management skills and have an opportunity to occasionally assist with biological projects. Light maintenance such as pruning, weed wacking, and painting will be performed by this candidate. Work is mainly completed in the fee booth with skill in multi tasking, using a cash register and handling stressful situations. Heat, biting insects , and inclement weather will be experienced on the refuge. An ability to handle many different types of people and situations is beneficial including the ability to tactfully handle angry crowds on hot days. A background check is required,  valid driver's license, and ability to walk and stand for long periods of time in various temperatures. Free excellent housing with large private bedroom is offered on site. No pets allowed.
