NHS Principal Communications - May 30, 2024
Our senior week is off and running. Today, our juniors participated in Ivy Day Ceremony with our senior class. This event steeped in many decades of tradition represents the symbolic passing down of leadership from our soon to be graduates to next year's senior class. Michelle Seznec offered her reflection as this year's Ivy Day Orator and the senior officers will use the historic trowel to plant their class's ivy seed on our campus. Tomorrow the entire school will celebrate the class of 2024 with the historic senior sing-out.
Don't forget there are 2 opportunities this weekend to participate in our senior celebration. The Car Parade will begin at 10:00 AM on Saturday. High Street (between N. Atkinson and Johnson Streets) is a great place to watch as well as Johnson Street, Toppans Lane, and the Nock School . Thank you to the NEF and PTO for supporting this fun event. Graduation Day is Sunday and the ceremony will start promptly at 11:00 AM on James Stehlin T Field with the graduates taking the traditional walk through the Arch of Roses
It is very impressive how the Newburyport community and schools have maintained these graduation week traditions across many generations of families.

In the Sophomore English and History classes, students have been preparing for their Sophomore Exposition. This culminating project allows students to explore a topic deeply and connect it to themes and skills learned in their English and History classes. Each student prepares a formal presentation that is delivered in front of a panel. The presentation schedule will be released next week, and we encourage each student to invite their parents to watch their presentation. This project is one example of students working towards and demonstrating our Portrait of a Graduate. I am appreciative of the work the English and History Departments have taken on to develop this interdisciplinary experience that works to strengthen our students' writing, research, presentation, and critical thinking skills.
Students who are part of the Red Cross Club have organized speakers presentations across the school year so students can learn more about service and programs affiliated with the Red Cross.
On Wednesday, June 5 at 7:00 PM, the Red Cross members will run a third speaker event that will be open for all students and families to attend. Four speakers will share personal stories of their experience utilizing Red Cross training to save a person's life. Here is the the event flyer.
Today, several students participated in a presentation regarding our partnership with the Peterson School. This partnership will allow students to work towards a license in trade such as electrical, plumbing, or HVAC while they are still in high school. If you have questions about this opportunity, please contact either your student's guidance counselor or our College and Career Counselor, Aaron Ribaudo-Smith.

SAILBOT COMPETITION - LOOKING TO 3-PEAT
Newburyport, with support from the NEF is hosting this year's Sailbot Tournament. This tournament includes secondary and post-secondary schools from around the country and beyond. Some notable competition includes teams from Virginia Tech, Cornell University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
The competition starts next Monday in Amesbury and will run all week. Here is a link to more information about the competition: Sailbot 2024. Good luck to our Clippers part of the tournament and note the Sailbot class is great for students with an interest in manufacturing, electronics, programming and design.
IGNITE PEER MENTOR PROGRAM
This week our Ignite Peer Mentors ran activities for our incoming 9th graders at the Nock Middle School. These activities provided a space for 8th graders to ask questions about high school while also learning from the insight of their older peers. We are looking forward to welcoming the Class of 2028 to Newburyport High School in the fall.
ATHLETICS
We have many teams who have extended their seasons to the spring tournament. See below for the current schedule. Good luck to Boys tennis today and our students participating in the track meet of champions.
