NHS Principal Communications - May 7, 2024

Congratulations on your senior’s upcoming graduation from Newburyport High School. Your student will be participating in many activities over the next few weeks. As with each graduating class, we want to make sure our graduates make smart decisions and stay safe.

MAY 15: SENIOR CLASS ASSEMBLY

On Wednesday, May 15, the administrative team will hold a senior class assembly to review end of year expectations and reinforce that our graduates make smart decisions and stay safe throughout all of the upcoming activities and celebrations. Additionally, class advisors Ms. Lieblein and Ms. Ragoza will review senior week plans and Mr. Littlefield will share the history and purpose around the traditional events that take place prior to graduation day. These include Vespers, Ivy Day, and the school-wide farewell to the seniors called the Sing-Out.

Please be sure to check in with your senior and have conversations around staying safe and smart. Here is a link to the Essex District Attorney's Prom and Graduation Safety site.

MAY 17: LAST DAY OF FORMAL CLASSES

The last day of formal classes will be Friday, May 17. Seniors will be dismissed at 10:45 AM for some activities organized by their class officers before heading home.

MAY 20-23: MANDATORY PARENT SENIOR WEEK SIGN-OFF + MEMORABILIA

For a senior to participate in senior week activities, parents/guardians need to sign-off that they have reviewed and received the senior expectations during senior week. This document makes parents aware of how seniors can lose the privilege of being at graduation if they violate any of the behavioral expectations*. When parents come to the school to sign this form, they will also pick-up their 3 Memorabilia Graduation Invitations.

*If obligations are still due when parents come in to sign the form, the obligations can be settled at this point.

Please see below for the times parents can come to the main office.

Monday, May 20 - 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM

Tuesday, May 21 - 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM

Wednesday, May 22 - 7:30 AM – 2:00 PM

Thursday, May 23 - 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM

MAY 24: CAP AND GOWN PICK-UP

Seniors will come to campus on Friday, May 24 between 9 and 10:00 AM to pick-up their caps and gowns. All student obligations (book returns, payments for lost school supplies, etc.) must be taken care of in order for a senior to receive their cap and gown. Caps and gowns are worn during the following senior week events: Vespers, Graduate Parade @ Schools, Class Photo, Ivy Day, Sing-out, Car Parade, and Graduation.

SENIOR WEEK - ONE PAGE SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES

Please note that Newburyport's Senior Week is very busy for the seniors. Rehearsals for Graduation and Vespers are mandatory. Parents are invited to view the Vespers Ceremony and Promenade as well as drive their graduate during the Car Parade.

We will hold our 5th annual Graduation Weekend Kick-Off Car Parade on Saturday, June 1st starting at 10:00 AM. The parade will begin at the Bresnahan School Parking Lot and culminate at the top of the high school driveway where cars will be greeted by Mayor Reardon and Superintendent Gallagher. Each graduate will receive a gift compliments of the NEF. I want to thank Mayor Reardon, the NEF and PTO for their partnership in continuing this fun way to start graduation weekend for all families.

This is a family event. Students will wear their cap and gowns and be driven by their family. Please see below for all specifics on the parade.

The graduation ceremony will start promptly at 11:00 AM. There are no tickets needed to attend & no limit on outdoor seating. If the ceremony needs to be postponed due to inclement weather, this decision will be made by 8:00 AM.

Traditionally, the graduation takes place outside and the postponed date will be the "Next Fair-Weather Day*." However, if reports indicate poor weather for several days, the graduation will be held indoors on Sunday, June 2nd.
