NHS Principal Communications -December 1, 2023
I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday. Our Color Day Rally just before the break was one of the most spirited events I have participated in since starting in Newburyport. I am very appreciative of the positive energy our students and staff continuously bring to the building, while our school blends traditional activities with new ideas to enhance our culture and climate. As with November, December has much that is taking place. Please be sure to read below for updates on:

A main objective of the November meeting allowed members to learn and provide feedback on high school improvement efforts. Some of these improvement areas included steps being taken to implement the Portrait of a Graduate as well as expand career-focused pathways for students. The team also reflected on the School Improvement Plan and discussed the school’s use of breathalyzers. Please click on the link below to read the summary from the November meeting.

Please consider this a reminder that next Tuesday students in grade 9, 11, and 12 will be taking the bi-annual Youth Assets – Attitudes and Behavior Survey. Students in grade 10 will take the iDECIDE Survey through MGH which has a focus on substance use, stress, and mental health. Both surveys are voluntary and take approximately 20 minutes. There is a lot happening in the world of visual and performing arts.
This weekend the National Art Honor Society is hosting their annual auction at the Senior Center on Saturday from 6 to 9:00 PM. This is a fabulous night of art, prizes, music, and hors d’oeuvres. It is a great way to see artwork produced by our students and beyond. Be sure to see the flyer above. It not only shares information about the auction but offers a glimpse of the impressive artwork our students produce. Thank you to Jack Bellerose for providing this display.
Our music program will be on full display on Tuesday, December 12 starting at 7:00 PM. The winter concert showcases our band, orchestra, and chorus. It is a great way to get into the holiday spirit.
No rest for the weary in the theater program. Auditions for the spring musical, Legally Blonde, are Monday, December 11 from 3:00 – 7:00 PM. Click here for more information. |

Newburyport High School is hosting a food drive in collaboration with Our Neighbors Table. Students organizing the drive hope to refill the pantry’s shelves after a busy Thanksgiving to make an impact across Essex County and beyond. Look for the large bins at the high school for the college and see this flyer for more information. |

Since last school year, teachers’ part of our visual and performing arts program have been working hard to re-envision their curriculum. Thanks to the generosity of the NEF, students in these classes use state of the art technology and devices to enhance their creativity. A new unit that recently culminated resulted in students from 2 different courses, Video Production and Music Technology, to collaborate around producing an original short film with a musical score. Students gained a strong understanding of the tone and emotion music elicits for the viewer when introduced into a scene of a film. Ms. Phillips and Mr. Cohen collaborated this summer to generate this unit of study and the students who are part of the 2 classes produced high quality products. |

Grade 9 Mentors ran their next activity with their grade 9 students. This lesson had students reflect on personality traits to recognize their own strengths and areas for support. Mentors were able to share their own stories, strengths and areas for growth as they started high school.
Grade 10 and 11 Students participated in post-secondary exploration activities. They had the choice of participating in a College Tour Activity or exploring Options Other Than College.

This week officers who are part of the Investment Club updated a team of advisors on their thinking around their investment portfolio. The club consists of over 50 students who learn the research involved in making investment decisions through participating in the national stock market game alongside preparing a portfolio with money allotted from the NEF. This week’s presenters included Stephen D’Ambrosio, Matt Hurley, Matt MacDougall, and Nolan Smith. They received valuable feedback from the advisory team and exhibited a strong understanding of the language associated with finance and investment. I want to thank the NEF for making this experience a reality along with all the members of the community who have taken time to offer feedback to the club on their portfolio.
Students can reach out to any of the officers above or advisor Mr. Sean McCarthy if they are interested in joining. |
