NHS Principal Communications - October 18, 2022

Hello Clipper Families,

As we head deeper into the fall, activities are in full swing. It was great to see such a large turn-out for Friday Night’s ALS cup. The student section was energized and both our teams came away with victories. Congratulations to all involved in organizing this event which is a strong fundraiser for ALS.

This week the freshman class will vote for their class officers as the school gears-up for the biggest spirit event of the year, Color Day. I want to commend all of the ninth graders who delivered a speech today in front of their peers. This is not easy to do, and they all conveyed strong messages in regards to the future of the class of 2026.

Please see below for other happenings, updates, and shout-outs.

HOMECOMING – FRIDAY, OCT 21

This Friday is our Homecoming Game which will be followed by the annual Homecoming Dance. Tickets will be on sale Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday during lunch. As with all dances, students cannot purchase a ticket at the dance. The celebration will go from 8:00 – 10:00 PM and is semi-formal attire.

FROM THE CLASSROOM

Be sure to check out these pictures from Dr. Hobb’s Environmental Field Studies class. Last Thursday and this past Monday, students went to Maudslay and Moseley Parks to participate in a macro invertebrates field study lab. Student’s studied various organisms and the materials within their ecosystem. Environmental Field Studies is one of 5 upper-level science classes affiliated with Southern New Hampshire University. Students who are enrolled can elect to earn dual credit (High School and College Credit) while taking the class. The other courses that fall into this category include, Anatomy and Physiology, Engineering in the 21st Century, AP Chemistry, and AP Environmental Science.

WAY TO GO!

WHITMAN ON WALLS

Senior Tuala Sullivan wowed an audience with her original poetry at Whitman on Walls, a project that engaged 60 performers from around the globe, produced by Compagnia de Colombari. She was one of nine local poets who responded to Whitman’s words with their own.

INTERACT CLUB

Interact Club is our largest student organization at NHS.  Sponsored and supported by the Rotarians, students learn leadership skills while discovering the power of service.   Due to the energy of advisor Jill Moran coupled with a membership of over 100 students strong, our club was asked to host an Interact Café tomorrow night for clubs across the region.  Discussions will range on a variety of topics from leadership to service.  Table discussions will be run by some of our students along with members of Newburyport’s local Rotarian chapter.

HIGH SCHOOL BAND

With the success of our sports teams, it is impossible not to recognize our high school band. They led us in spirit at our opening of school rally and have brought the energy to our home football games. Their talent continues to grow as they lead us in cheer and energize our pride for NHS. I'm looking forward to hearing our band at this weeks homecoming game as well as seeing them at the upcoming Veterans Day Parade and the seasonal Santa Parade. Thank you to all of the members, parents, and Mr. Cohen for continuing to grow our program.

BLOOD DRIVE

I’d like to commend our National Honor Society students on the organization of last Friday’s Blood Drive. They managed the entire event with support from their advisor, Ken Cole. They coordinated with the Red Cross, helped with the set-up, managed sign-ups and provided moral support for all of our donors. Due to their work, 42 people will benefit from the units collected during the drive.

FALL SEASON ATHLETICS

Looks like the fall sports season will be extended for every team. The team records below are amazing.  Good luck to the golf team in today’s CAL championship tournament and congratulations to Jane Mettling and James Forrest-Hay on being named September Athletes of the Month.
