NHS Principal Communications 11-21-24

Our students are gearing up for the Color Day celebration on Wednesday! This event is steeped in school history and embodies the same spirit as it did back in 1940. Students engage in friendly competition while celebrating our Clipper Community in lively fashion. Ultimately, this is a fun event that gets everyone into the spirit of being a Clipper. Color Day is next Wednesday, students will be released from school at 11:45 AM.

You have 3 more chances to see “The Play That Goes Wrong”! Last Saturday, I was able to enjoy opening night, and I must say you will not be disappointed.

The main purpose of my message tonight is to update you on the November School Council Meeting. The meeting focused on feedback for our school improvement plan. Using performance results to make decisions on goals and objectives, the School Council is tasked with developing a 2-year improvement plan that is connected to the NPS strategic plan.

Last school year, the high school participated in the first round of the accreditation process with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). A team of educators from around New England spent several days visiting classrooms and interviewing students, parents, teachers, and community members. They reviewed curriculum, student work, and a self-study prepared by the faculty. The NEASC team then provided NHS with feedback using the Standards of Accreditation and will return next fall to assess our growth.

To develop the focus areas of our improvement plan, our team used the NEASC feedback, a program self-evaluation by the faculty, and a review of student performance on assessments (e.g., MCAS and PSAT). Last week, the School Council reviewed the improvement plan and provided feedback so that I could finalize it.

Below is a summary of the conversation from the School Council meeting along with the high school improvement plan which can also be found on-line.

ADVANCED ROBOTIC STUDENTS SUPPORT DISCOVERY FRIDAYS AT THE MOLIN

Students part of Ms. McNulty's Advanced Robotics class have been able to support their younger peers at the Molin for their November Discovery Fridays. These series of discovery days have focused on coding and robotics. It has been great for our students to help 4th and 5th graders extend their thinking around this type of technology.

Thank you to the following students for supporting this experience.

Violet Aldrich, Justina Bucknill, Nadav Bukhin, Grace Daigle, Martin DeJesus, Devin Menard, Parker Schmidt, Ryland Seese, Tyler Thorne, Jose Velasquez Perez

This past weekend the NHS music teachers, Risa Anniccharico, Kathy Sheperd, and Steve Cohen brought 8 musicians to audition for the Northeastern district senior band, chorus, and orchestra festival. Five of our students were accepted, and will perform in a concert along with the best musicians from 70 area schools!

Congratulations to Josh Burrell, Evan Lagueux, Sam Parr, Max Piotrowski, and Cedar Schumacher. This is a tremendous accomplishment and we should all be proud.

Last week students, Maddie Rhoden and Elsie Degrano were invited to present at the Audubon Salt Marsh Science Student Conference. Both students participated in the Environmental Field Studies class last school year which is part of our Environmental Innovation Pathway program. The depth of their field research was quite impressive as you can see from their topics below.

  • Examination of Nutrient Levels in the Great Salt Marsh as it Relates to Biodiversity of Halophytes and Perpetuating Salt Marsh Erosion in Newburyport, MA

  • Relationship between nutrient levels in the Joppa Flats Salt Marsh and the presence of Spartina Alterniflora and Phragmites

The Investment Club continues to fine tune its investment portfolio using funds provided by the NEF. This past Tuesday, students part of the club provided a presentation to a board of local financial advisors for feedback. Board members noted the high level of professionalism and the impressive depth of knowledge around their investments. This club started 3 years ago through NEF's vision to provide a realistic investment experience for our students. The NEF is a true partner in the work to push our students forward.
