HOURS:
The RAN Library is open throughout the school day. Teachers schedule their classes into the library for curriculum-based activities. Students may also come to the library on an individual basis, with a pass from a teacher.
Our hours after school are:
Monday until: 3:00
Tuesday-Friday: 2:15

VISION STATEMENT
The Newburyport School District Library Media Program will provide timely, accurate, and comprehensive information services and programs to the school community. Strong emphasis is placed on the development of literacy skills and standards necessary to promote life long learning. The School Library Media Program provides instruction, collaboration, and leadership to the school system and surrounding community.

MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Newburyport School District is to ensure that all students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. The Library Media Program, including facilities, services, materials and human resources are an integral part of the learning process. The collections in the school library/media centers provide a wide range of materials on all levels of difficulty, with diversity of appeal and the presentation of different points of view. The materials are provided for students, teachers, administrators, and members of the community.

LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALISTS’ GOALS
- To provide strong and creative leadership in building and nurturing a culture of learning.
- To develop a thorough knowledge of subject and grade level curricula, and promote competency in information literacy across the curriculum.
- To master a deep understanding of the information literacy standards for student learning and of the specific relationships between the standards and the curricular goals of the school and the district.
- Create and promote a rationale for infusing the information literacy standards for student learning into curricular and instructional policies for the district and the school.
- To develop and promote specific plans for incorporating the information literacy standards for student learning into day-to-day curricular and instructional activities.
- To collaborate regularly with teachers and other members of the learning community to encourage students to become information literate, independent in their learning, and socially responsible in their use of information and information technology.
- To build and maintain a current collection that supports instructional excellence across the curriculum while including a wide range of information issues, resources, and technology.
- To establish and maintain ties with information resources and services within the local community that can assist in meeting learners needs.
To evaluate, acquire, provide, and promote information resources to meet the informational needs of all learners.

ACQUISITIONS
Curriculum needs and user interests govern the acquisition of resources. The primary purpose of acquisitions is meet user needs and interests in the most timely and cost-effective way. In addition to traditional print and non-print resources, consideration for acquisitions will include network or database membership fees, on-line costs, site licenses, document delivery and telecommunications charges. Whenever possible, resources are previewed and evaluated before acquisition.

GIFT ACCEPTANCE POLICY
Gifts of new or old library materials will be accepted only if they meet with the selection criteria. Selection criteria will also be applied to gifts of money that carry purchasing restrictions. Unrestricted gifts of money will be used at the discretion of the Library Media Specialist to meet collection needs. Gifts of books and other materials are accepted but without commitments as to final disposition and with the understanding that they are not necessarily to be added to the collection. Receipts stating the value of gift material will not be given. When applicable, a form will be signed by the donor upon presentation of materials to the Newburyport School Library Media Centers and will be filed for future reference.

COPYRIGHT
Newburyport School district adheres to the Copyright Law. A copyright handbook has been developed as a legal guideline for the reproduction and fair use of resources. The library media staff assumes responsibility for the education of staff and students as to the copyright law.

The Library Media Program has a strong commitment to the right of intellectual freedom for the learning community. The School Library Media Program promotes an atmosphere of free inquiry. Freedom of access to information and ideas is essential for students and others to become critical thinkers, competent problem solvers, and life-long learners who contribute productively and ethically to society.
