RUPERT A. NOCK MIDDLE SCHOOL

HISTORY and SOCIAL SCIENCES

Students in RAN social studies courses will develop and grow as students of history and as readers and writers. They will learn to critically evaluate historical events and to develop opinions based on evidence. They will develop, practice, and master a wide range of skills including evaluating sources, reading maps, identifying cause and effect, and drawing logical conclusions. They will also learn and practice important study skills including note taking, paraphrasing, researching and referencing.

Students will follow a progression from the study of world geography (grade 6) to ancient civilizations (grade 7) to the foundations of American democracy (grade 8). At each grade level, students will be taught to use a variety of sources to understand history and geography. By the end of grade 8, our students will have a basic understanding of the places of the world, the development of civilizations over time, and the foundations of our American democracy.
