School Choice Process

Each year the School Committee votes on whether or not the Newburyport Public Schools will participate in the state's School Choice program for the upcoming school year. This is typically voted in mid to late February. Once the School Committee approves the School Choice program, the administration determines seat availability at the various grade levels and recommends opening grades. The school district will then advertise that the Newburyport Public Schools will be offering seats at the approved grades. (For example in 2010-2011, there was seat availability in grades 6, 7, 8, & 9.)

Once advertised we may accept applications only for the grades that are available. If there are more applicants than seats available at a particular grade level, a lottery will be held to determine who will be accepted and the others will remain on a waitlist until future seats become available. Notification of acceptance typically begins in mid-May. You would be contacted via letter.

When School Choice is available, there will be applications available on this webpage, as well as at the Office of the Superintendent.
